Docteur en Géologie Structurale de l’Université Paris VI en 1977, Dominique Cluzel a exercé 5 ans en coopération (Algérie, Zaïre). Nommé maître de conférences à Orléans en 1981, il oriente sa recherche à son retour d’Afrique sur la Corée du Sud, objet de sa thèse d’Etat soutenue en 1990. Nommé professeur en Nouvelle-Calédonie en 1991, il assure les fonctions de directeur du département de la recherche et des études doctorales et parallèlement, de chargé de mission pour l’immobilier. Au plan de la recherche, il s’attache à une révision de la géologie de l’île dans son cadre régional. Il retourne à Orléans en 1998 où il exerce pendant 10 ans et assure de nombreuses responsabilités (équipe de recherche, mission immobilier, direction de département) tout en menant en parallèle des recherches en Chine (région du Xinjiang) et en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Il revient à l’Université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie en 2008 où il reprend successivement ou simultanément diverses responsabilités collectives (conseil d’administration, présidence de la commission des finances, direction du département des sciences, responsabilité du DEUST Géosciences, CS du CNRT Nickel). Il accède à l’éméritat le 1er septembre 2018 et poursuit son activité de recherche sur la géodynamique de deux régions clés, la Nouvelle-Calédonie et le Xinjiang.
